Internal Audits are an important and necessary undertaking within any business regardless of size. Whether an internal audit is undertaken on the ISO management systems and controls or the general portfolio of day to day policies and procedures an internal audit can help you identify gaps such as:

  • Missing or incorrect processes
  • Missing or incorrect policies
  • Incorrect data/content
  • Out of date approaches
  • Incorrect legislation

It is recommended that an internal audit be carried out at least once on an annual basis.

For ISO Management Systems you have to ensure the entire management system(s) is/are audited within that year before your surveillance audit is undertaken by the external auditor.

We recommend that ISO audits are undertaken monthly to ensure you do not have any surprises that put you under pressure to resolve. The complexity of your organisation should ultimately dictate your approach and the frequency of the internal audits

It can be a tendency to reduce the amount of Internal Audits carried out because problems aren’t reported. The reality is that issues do probably exist; it’s just that the Internal Audits aren’t as effective as they could be.
